Can I use MDF as bunkie board?

The simple answer is yes. But neither particle board, OSB or MDF, the options people are most likely to select, are going to be as strong as plywood will be. To make up for that, it would be necessary to construct a thicker Bunkie board, with multiple layers of those plywood materials.

With that being said, not all engineered wood composites are cheap and low-quality. MDF puts its strength and density to good use in some applications. You may find it in media cabinets, for example, because it won't warp from the heat that comes off of electronics.
